Generation Festival
"What stories can we share about our city?"
The course is designed to foster innovative urban storytelling through a hands-on design and build program. Students will gain knowledge in construction while contributing to a structure with a significant social role in Bergen. This pilot project, under the Greymatter research theme by Jerome Picard, focuses on intergenerational integration and inclusion of minorities in urban renewal.
The project introduces a new design language, combining construction techniques and color to create a unique public space for theater company Bergen Borgerscene at the Bergen International Festival. The primary structure, Story-telling booth, designed by LOCAL, will adhere to the theater’s brief, while additional elements like outdoor benches and interactive pavilions will be student creations, encouraging new urban narratives.
Initially showcased at Festallmenningen from May 22 to 31, the project will then move to the House of Literature for the Generations Festival. This transition will involve a procession with active student participation. The public will be invited to share their visions for the future of Bergen, emphasizing positive societal values. This booth will function as an outdoor stage for interviews and informal conversations, constructed sustainably with unique artistic expression.
Bergen Citizens’ Stage aims to create relevant and engaging theater, promoting an open and inclusive society. It challenges traditional perceptions of theater, fostering artistic development and engaging in societal debates with a focus on values like openness, community, diversity, and empathy.
The project will creatively showcase public ideas and reflections, making the booth and surrounding area an interactive installation. It serves as a prelude to a performance planned in collaboration with Den Nationale Scene in 2025.
