Overlooking the Loire River landscape, the transformation of the Ermitage Hospital asserts a distinctive identity shaped by its location, urban context, and architectural form. The project adds exterior circulation elements to the façade, following the upgrade of the existing envelope’s thermal performance. This “graft” presents two faces: on the Loire side, to the south, balconies extend the dual-aspect apartments and accentuate the building’s slender profile. Their pattern of solids and voids animates the façade as the sun moves across the sky. On the neighborhood side, to the north, generous open-air access galleries serve the apartments and offer residents new, lively shared spaces. The landscape design anchors the site’s reconfiguration with the planting of a vineyard plot and the opening of the belvedere park to the public.
